Although it is rare to find adults who have perfectly round shaped pupils, this is the ideal shape. This module is an explanation of the pupil and its various irregularities and their significance in human health.

A marked change in pupil size indicates dominance in either the sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous system, which can have a marked effect on metabolic function.  

​

Although the vast majority of us are born with round pupils, this shape can change over time. Since the spine is represented on the pupil border, shape variations offer valuable insight into specific structural problems. These can have a reflex effect on various organs, muscles and metabolic processes. Many examples of sectoral flattening have psychological implications. These are described in this section.
